Volunteering opportunities

Perhaps the best aspect of being a Podiatrist is having a skill that can be of immediate and direct benefit to others. Obviously you need most of your time to earn your living but if you want to get out there and do something a bit different you'll find plenty of reward from time spent volunteering. Here are a few organisations that could get good value from your time.

Crisis. Working mostly in London and SE England Crisis offers a wide range of services to homeless and vulnerably housed people. Every year Crisis run the 'London Open Christmas' offering an amazing array of services, including podiatry, over a 10 day period. Refreshingly free from bureaucracy - people can just turn up and get treated if they need it. Crisis have very good equipment and instruments for podiatry (plus volunteer foot washers!), all they need is the time of a few skilled Podiatrists on the day(s) you choose. www.crisis.org.uk

Leprosy Focus Group for Podiatrists. With over 800,000 new cases found every year leprosy remains of huge world-wide concern. The focus group works with LEPRA and other organisations to promote the benefits of podiatric care for those suffering the after effects of leprosy infection. They are also the first port of call if you are interested in volunteering for the Calcutta Rescue Clinics and for Podiatrists with an interest in actively supporting the growth of podiatry/leprosy links. www.leprahealthinaction.org/podiatry

Education and Information

The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, only for members of the SCP there are numerous links to educational / CPD content and a very important message forum where it is possible and advised to make your comments about UK podiatry and the running of the SCP.

The Diabetic Foot, a good refresher on caring for the diabetic foot and a fantastic opportunity to download and print out foot care advice in 30 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Swahili and Welsh to name a few. So if your Bangladeshi or Tagalog isn't quite cutting it with some of your patients make sure you pay a visit!
